What is Canine Influenza?

Canine influenza is a contagious respiratory disease that cannot be transmitted to humans, but can spread rapidly among dogs, particularly in close-contact environments like kennels or dog parks.
How Does It Spread?
Canine influenza spreads through respiratory secretions (coughing, sneezing) and contact with contaminated objects like toys, bedding, or food bowls. Dogs can be contagious even before they show symptoms, and the virus can survive in the environment for up to two days!
Signs to Watch For
Symptoms include coughing, runny nose, fever, and lethargy. While most dogs develop mild symptoms, some may experience severe illness leading to pneumonia. Older dogs and puppies are at higher risk for complications.
Prevention and Treatment
If your dog shows any signs of illness, keep them away from other animals and contact your veterinarian. Good hygiene practices, such as regular hand washing and cleaning of objects that your dog interacts with, can help reduce the spread of the virus.

Should I Keep My Dog at Home?
If your dog is sick, it's best to avoid places where they can interact with other dogs, such as kennels, dog parks, or daycares. Be sure to ask facilities about their procedures if a dog falls ill
